The best vegan supplements for beginners
The short answer
Almost every vegan should take vitamin B12. After that, vitamin D3 (from lichen) is worth it for most people, and iodine, omega-3 (algae oil), iron and calcium depend on what you eat and on a blood test. Everything else — mushrooms, adaptogens, superfood powders — is optional.
Start with the non-negotiable: vitamin B12
B12 is made by bacteria, not plants, so a plant-based diet without fortified foods or a supplement will run short over time. Adults need about 2.4 mcg a day according to the NIH. Because absorption from a single dose is limited, supplements usually contain far more than that. Read our vegan B12 guide for forms and doses.
Then cover vitamin D3
Most vitamin D3 comes from sheep's wool lanolin, which is not vegan. Vegan D3 is made from lichen. If you live far from the equator, spend most of the day indoors or have darker skin, a supplement is the simplest way to cover the 600 IU (15 mcg) daily recommendation for adults. Check the 'depends on your plate' nutrients
- Iodine: plant foods are low in iodine unless you use iodized salt or eat seaweed. Sea moss contains iodine, but the amount varies a lot.
- Iron: plant (non-heme) iron absorbs less efficiently. Pair beans and greens with vitamin C, and test before supplementing. See vegan iron supplements.
- Omega-3 (EPA/DHA): flax and chia give ALA, which converts poorly. Algae oil is the vegan source of EPA and DHA.
- Calcium and zinc: usually covered by fortified plant milk, tofu set with calcium, legumes and seeds.
What can wait
Functional mushrooms, adaptogens, greens powders and beauty supplements can be useful, but they sit on top of a diet that already covers the basics. Add one at a time so you can tell what each does for you.
How to choose a vegan supplement
- Look for capsules made from plant cellulose (HPMC or pullulan), not gelatin.
- Check gummies for gelatin — vegan gummies use pectin.
- Look at the supplement facts panel for the exact dose and form, not just the front label.
- Prefer brands that publish full ingredient lists.

Questions
- Do vegans really need supplements?
- Yes for vitamin B12 — it is not reliably available from unfortified plant foods. Other supplements depend on your diet, location and blood tests.
- What is the single most important vegan supplement?
- Vitamin B12. A long-term shortfall can take years to show up, so it is easier to prevent than to correct.
- Are gummies or capsules better?
- Neither is better by default. Capsules carry higher doses and no sugar; gummies are easier for people who dislike swallowing pills. Check vegan gummies are made with pectin, not gelatin.
