Sea moss benefits, iodine, and how much to take per day
The short answer
Sea moss (Irish moss, Chondrus crispus, and related Gracilaria species) is a red seaweed that provides iodine, minerals and soluble fiber. A typical serving is 1–2 tablespoons of gel or the capsule label dose daily. Because iodine levels vary a lot, more is not better.
What sea moss is
Sea moss is a red algae harvested along Atlantic coasts and farmed in the Caribbean. When soaked and blended it forms a gel, thanks to carrageenan, a natural soluble fiber.
What it provides
- Iodine, which the thyroid uses to make hormones.
- Minerals such as potassium, magnesium and calcium in small amounts.
- Soluble fiber that acts as a prebiotic for gut bacteria.
How much sea moss per day
- Gel: 1–2 tablespoons (about 4–8 g).
- Capsules: follow the label; don't stack with other iodine sources without checking totals.
The adult upper limit for iodine is 1,100 mcg a day (NIH). Seaweed iodine content can vary severalfold between batches, so moderation matters.
Who should be careful
People with thyroid conditions or taking thyroid medication should talk to a clinician first. Choose products from clean waters with heavy-metal testing.
Gel, gummies or capsules
Gel goes into smoothies; capsules are measured and portable; gummies are convenient but usually lower dose.
