Activated charcoal is plant-based carbon processed at high temperature to develop a porous internal structure — a single gram has a surface area of over 1,000 square metres.
That surface adsorbs (binds onto) molecules. Topically that means lifting oil and impurities from the skin. Orally, charcoal is reserved for acute binding situations under clinical guidance — it is not a daily detox.
How it works in the body
Adsorption — molecules physically stick to the carbon surface. The effect is non-selective, which is precisely why oral charcoal can also bind nutrients and medications.
What you can expect
Topical clarifying
Lifts excess sebum and surface impurities.
Good for: skin
04 — PROTOCOL
Topical: in a cleanser or mask, used as directed. Oral: only under clinical guidance and never within two hours of medication or supplements.
05 — SOURCING
Coconut-shell activated charcoal is the cleanest commercial source. Cosmetic grade for skin; USP grade for ingestion.
06 — CAUTION
Oral charcoal binds medications including birth control. Not for ongoing daily oral use.
What the studies say
HONEST NOTE
Peer-reviewed human evidence specifically for Activated Charcoal is still limited. We use it for its traditional context and mechanistic profile, but we won't cite trials that don't exist.
