Turmeric is the underground stem of a tropical plant in the ginger family. It has been used for at least four thousand years across South Asian cooking and medicine, where its yellow pigment doubles as a dye and a daily anti-inflammatory.
Curcuminoids are the family of polyphenols responsible for most of the studied effects.
How it works in the body
Curcumin modulates several inflammatory signalling pathways including NF-κB. It is poorly absorbed on its own — piperine from black pepper increases bioavailability dramatically, as do phospholipid carriers like Meriva.
What you can expect
Inflammatory balance
Modulates inflammatory pathways the body sometimes overuses.
Good for: recovery · longevity
Joint comfort
Studied as a daily support for stiff or recovering joints.
Good for: recovery
Liver and detox
Supports phase II detoxification pathways.
Good for: gut · skin
04 — PROTOCOL
500–1000 mg of curcumin extract with piperine, taken with a meal containing fat.
05 — SOURCING
Look for standardized 95% curcuminoid extract paired with piperine or phytosomal delivery. Pure powder rarely delivers a clinical dose.
06 — CAUTION
May potentiate anticoagulants. People with gallbladder disease should consult a clinician.
What the studies say
The active fraction of turmeric (curcuminoids) is one of the best-studied natural anti-inflammatory compounds. Multiple meta-analyses now show curcumin extracts produce clinically meaningful pain and function improvements in osteoarthritis comparable to NSAIDs in some trials.
Honest caveatPlain dietary turmeric is poorly absorbed. Trial benefits typically use standardised, bioavailability-enhanced extracts (with piperine, phytosomes, or micellar formulations).

Honest answers
- Why turmeric with black pepper?
- Piperine from black pepper increases curcumin bioavailability up to twentyfold. Without it, most curcumin is poorly absorbed.
