Turmeric is the underground stem of a tropical plant in the ginger family. It has been used for at least four thousand years across South Asian cooking and medicine, where its yellow pigment doubles as a dye and a daily anti-inflammatory.
Curcuminoids are the family of polyphenols responsible for most of the studied effects.
How it works in the body
Curcumin modulates several inflammatory signalling pathways including NF-κB. It is poorly absorbed on its own — piperine from black pepper increases bioavailability dramatically, as do phospholipid carriers like Meriva.
