- Best taken
- Post-workout or empty stomach
Glutamine is the most abundant free amino acid in the body. Under stress — heavy training, illness, surgery — demand exceeds supply, and it becomes conditionally essential.
It is the preferred fuel for enterocytes (gut lining cells) and a key substrate for immune cell function.
How it works in the body
Supports the integrity of the gut lining, helps maintain immune cell activity under stress, and contributes to muscle protein synthesis post-training.
What you can expect
Gut lining support
Primary fuel for the cells that line the small intestine.
Good for: gut · recovery
Recovery
Supports muscle and immune recovery after demanding training.
Good for: recovery
04 — PROTOCOL
5 g post-workout or on an empty stomach, mixed in water.
05 — SOURCING
Pharmaceutical-grade L-glutamine, third-party tested for purity.
06 — CAUTION
Generally safe. People with cirrhosis or certain seizure disorders should consult a clinician.
What the studies say
L-glutamine is the primary fuel for enterocytes (gut-lining cells). The most rigorous human trial — Zhou et al. in Gut — showed clinically meaningful improvement in post-infectious IBS-D specifically.
Honest caveatStrong evidence is in post-infectious IBS-D; benefit in healthy adults or other GI conditions is less established.
- 01RCT
Randomised placebo-controlled trial of dietary glutamine supplements for postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome
Zhou Q, Verne ML, Fields JZ, et al. · Gut (BMJ) · 2019 · n=106
“Oral glutamine therapy significantly reduced IBS-Symptom Severity Score (≥50-point reduction) in patients with postinfectious IBS-D and increased intestinal permeability.”
Plain EnglishLandmark RCT: oral glutamine produced clinically meaningful symptom improvement in postinfectious IBS-D.
- 02MECHANISTIC STUDY
Glutamine Restores Tight Junction Protein Claudin-1 Expression in Colonic Mucosa of Patients With Diarrhea-Predominant IBS
Bertrand J, Ghouzali I, Guérin C, et al. · JPEN. Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition · 2016
“Glutamine restored colonic claudin-1 tight-junction protein expression in IBS-D patients, providing a mechanistic basis for the symptom improvements observed clinically.”
Plain EnglishMechanistic study: explains how glutamine works — by restoring tight-junction proteins in the gut lining.
