Matcha is the powdered leaf of shade-grown Camellia sinensis, ground on granite stone in a tradition refined over five centuries in Japan.
Because the whole leaf is consumed (not just an infusion), matcha delivers a denser dose of L-theanine, chlorophyll and EGCG than steeped green tea.
How it works in the body
Caffeine drives alertness; L-theanine smooths it. The combination is associated with focused calm rather than stimulant edge. EGCG is a polyphenol with antioxidant activity.
What you can expect
Focused calm
Caffeine + L-theanine produce alertness without jitter.
Good for: focus · energy
Antioxidant support
EGCG content rivals — and exceeds — most other teas.
Good for: longevity · skin

Honest answers
- Matcha or coffee?
- Matcha gives a lower-amplitude, longer curve of alertness. Many people use both — matcha later in the day for focus without disrupting sleep.
