Matcha is the powdered leaf of shade-grown Camellia sinensis, ground on granite stone in a tradition refined over five centuries in Japan.
Because the whole leaf is consumed (not just an infusion), matcha delivers a denser dose of L-theanine, chlorophyll and EGCG than steeped green tea.
How it works in the body
Caffeine drives alertness; L-theanine smooths it. The combination is associated with focused calm rather than stimulant edge. EGCG is a polyphenol with antioxidant activity.
What you can expect
Focused calm
Caffeine + L-theanine produce alertness without jitter.
Good for: focus · energy
Antioxidant support
EGCG content rivals — and exceeds — most other teas.
Good for: longevity · skin
04 — PROTOCOL
1–2 g whisked into hot (not boiling) water in the morning. Avoid drinking it directly with iron-rich meals.
05 — SOURCING
Ceremonial-grade only for daily use. Bright jade colour, fine texture, and a sweet vegetal aroma are the markers.
06 — CAUTION
Caffeine sensitive? Start with half a serving. May reduce non-heme iron absorption — separate from iron-rich meals by an hour.
What the studies say
Matcha's cognitive reputation is largely the L-theanine + caffeine combination, the single best-studied 'calm-alert' nootropic pairing. A 2014 Oxford-published meta-analysis remains the canonical reference, with newer reviews extending the data into matcha specifically.
Honest caveatAcute attention/mood effects are well-replicated; chronic 'long-term smarter' claims are not supported.

Honest answers
- Matcha or coffee?
- Matcha gives a lower-amplitude, longer curve of alertness. Many people use both — matcha later in the day for focus without disrupting sleep.
