Ginkgo is the sole survivor of an order of trees that predates dinosaurs. Individual ginkgoes can live a thousand years.
Its medicinal preparation is a standardized leaf extract — typically EGb 761 or equivalent — concentrated to 24% flavone glycosides and 6% terpene lactones.
How it works in the body
Flavonoids act as antioxidants in vascular tissue; terpene lactones (ginkgolides, bilobalide) influence platelet activating factor and may support microcirculation, including cerebral blood flow.
